Wine and Well-Being
As we transition into 2025, many of us are reflecting on our goals and envisioning the future. For those who enjoy wine, there's good news: this beloved pastime can contribute to a better year. In this blog, we’re exploring how wine can enhance your well-being in 2025!
Relaxation and Mood Enhancement
Opening a wine bottle engages 14 muscles—a perfect way to unwind after a long day and warm up for a relaxing evening. Beyond the relaxing effects of alcohol, the plant compound resveratrol, naturally present in grapes and wine, has been linked to anxiety reduction. As Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of penicillin, famously said, “Penicillin cures, but wine makes people happy.”
Physical Health Benefits
Though research varies, we are optimistic about the benefits of good wine enjoyed in moderation. Compounds in red wine such as polyphenols and ethanol have been reliably linked to anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting results. While we won’t tell you to take it with your morning multivitamin, we’re thankful for every bit of immune boost we can get during cold and flu season! Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly rich in procyanidins, a compound that can further enhance blood flow and combat inflammation. Red wine in general, especially when paired with food, may lower bad cholesterol (LDL), increase good cholesterol (HDL). The fermentation process of winemaking also benefits us winos! Fermented foods are good for digestion. The compounds that manifest during fermentation help take care of the good bacteria in your gut. When it comes to fermented foods, regularity is key, and the more the merrier! Consumption of other such foods, such as kefir and kimchi, will give your body an even greater probiotic boost.
Unique Advantages of Wine
While alcohol itself is generally considered a carcinogen, moderate wine consumption has been associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers and improved quality of life. Red wine's high antioxidant content helps combat free radicals, which damage cells. Pairing wine with antioxidant-rich dark chocolate can amplify this effect, which is the kind of news we like to hear! And it’s not just chocolate; a recent study from the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease found that brain function was boosted and cognitive decline was slowed in individuals who enjoyed wine and cheese on a regular basis. While the findings are in the process of further testing, we can’t help but get excited. Sangiovese and aged pecorino, here we come!
The Importance of Moderation
Moderation is key to reaping the health benefits of wine. One to two glasses per day have been linked to improved cardiovascular health and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. While the USDA and Human Health Services don't recommend increasing alcohol consumption solely for health reasons, moderate enjoyment of wine, especially with delicious food and beloved friends, is our favorite way to enrich life.
